2 Jesus’ use of comedy is not often mentioned in Christian literature but is highlighted in a slim but useful book, now out of print, called The Humor of Christ by Elton Trueblood. (Yes, he really is called Elton Trueblood. With a name like that, he should be writing Gothic fiction, but instead he chose to write a book demonstrating that Jesus employed comedy far more often than it first appears; Elton Trueblood, The Humor of Christ (New York: Harper and Row, 1964).)

3 There are many ways of reading this incident in Mark 7.28. There is no way that Jesus would have really thought that Gentiles were dogs, since his inclusion of Gentiles and outsiders in his kingdom is one of its key features.
